A Traditional Chinese First Birthday at The Eight, Sydney

For a 2026 first-birthday celebration at The Eight in Sydney, the brief called for a large Chinese-inspired backdrop with layered balloon, floral and cultural details.

Happy Balloons brought the design together with draping, a custom Chinese floral arrangement, handcrafted balloon flowers, faux florals, a Snake-year baby-girl motif, 聪明门 and 抓周 styling, table centrepieces and floating helium details.

Backdrop and floral composition

A backdrop built around tradition

The main installation used a large backdrop with layered draping to create a warm, ceremonial setting inside the venue. Red, gold and soft blush tones gave the balloon work a strong Chinese-inspired direction while keeping the composition welcoming for a first birthday.

A custom Chinese floral arrangement sat within the backdrop, joined by faux florals and coordinated prop pieces. The result was a complete photo area rather than a single balloon feature: fabric, flowers, balloons and cultural details were planned as one scene.

Design briefThe family wanted a traditional Chinese first-birthday setting with a large background, floral detail and space for the celebration’s cultural elements.

Custom balloon craft

A Snake-year story in balloon form

The styling was created for a baby girl born in the Year of the Snake, with a custom girl-snake KT-board design incorporated into the display. The artwork gave the installation a personal centre point without taking away from the broader Chinese styling.

Handcrafted balloon flowers were woven into the balloon chain alongside faux florals, reflective finishes and different balloon sizes. These handmade details added texture to the arrangement and helped the balloon work sit naturally beside the printed panels and fabric draping.

聪明门 and 抓周

A cultural detail guests could interact with

The setup included a 聪明门 and a 抓周 display, bringing a familiar first-birthday ritual into the wider balloon design. The gate was styled as part of the photo area, so it worked as both a decorative prop and a meaningful feature for the family.

At the top of the gate, a balloon “葱” detail added a visual Chinese wordplay connection to “聪”. It was a small handmade element, but it gave the entrance its own story and tied the balloon craft back to the celebration.

The child-inspired artwork and existing privacy masking were retained in the public-ready image set; the page does not identify the child by name.

A considered family brief

A first birthday with room for every detail

This The Eight celebration combined a large draped backdrop, Chinese floral styling, handcrafted balloon flowers, faux florals, a Snake-year baby-girl motif, 聪明门, 抓周 props, table centrepieces and helium details.

By bringing the traditional elements into the same visual language as the balloon work, the installation felt personal to the family and complete across the room.
